Pneumozyme is an enzyme derived from a soil-dwelling bacterium that specifically degrades the capsular polysaccharide of Type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn). Type 3 Spn continues to be one of the most lethal serotypes of Spn, despite its inclusion in approved glycoconjugate pneumonia vaccines. Its main virulence factor is its thick, mucoid polysaccharide capsule, which protects it from immune-mediated killing. Pneumozyme degrades the capsular polysaccharide of Spn type 3, promoting immune clearance of this deadly microbe.
